So I've been reading Plutarch (himself a Greek) recently, and he in his biographies clearly considers Macedonians foreiners, an outside force Greeks should have united against. Herodotus has a story about a Macedonian king who was allowed to take part in the Olympic games only after the presented a proof his ancestors were from Peloppones. It looks like Macedonians were a part of the Balkan linguistical continuum, somewhere between Greeks and Thracians.
Also, it's reasonable to assume Slavic genetical impact on the population was minimal and the modern Macedonians are actually descendants of the ancient ones.
