Stalin is a better exemple of a "Prince". He even kept a personal copy of the book, with notes. He really operated by the principle that it's good to be feared by your subjects.

The main point of the Prince is actually hardly Machiavellian by the contemporary sense. It was a guide for actually benevolent monarchs on how not to get crushed by those who lack a backbone - like Putin.
