How else can society as a whole justify the existence of the state and the power it has. Without this fundamental belief all that remains in blind belief and raw power which inevitably take worse paths for the people who live in such societies. If a society isn't aiming for the common good then leadership of said societies become violent competitions to take ice the top spot and the ability to extract resources from society.

I suppose it falls on point of perspective, if you value human life then you would wish to ensure that at the basest of measures undue suffering won't befall your fellows in need.
