Unsuccessful civilizations tend to request recognition of minor attributes they did in successful ones.

For instance; Dr. Who going out of its way to show us how much Africans built up the British empire, instead of showing us the African empires of western and Eastern Africa.

There were no doubt, many Africans who contributed to the stregth of the British empire; but they show a greater desire to have their contributions to that recognized, rather than their own mighty civilizations.

It's because it's the only part of Africa that the average person has a vague historical awareness of. Educating people takes work so they piggyback on top of what people already know.

Artistic depictions of Jesus traditionally take after the society of the artist. Asians portray Jesus as being Asian, Africans depict him as being African, Europeans depict him as being European. There's nothing wrong with this.

A more comparable example would be the people in the 1970s who claimed that whites built Great Zimbabwe.
