How did the former Warsaw Pact nations so seamlessly adopt liberalism after decades of communist rule? You'd think it'd be a huge cultural shock.
>>
most were western-european minded while Russia is more asian and collectivist
>>
Most of them had been democracies for brief periods of time after WWI.

That's hardly enough time to have a democratic culture like America, the UK or France.

It was.

If you had no knowledge of Russias history at all and simply looked at the state their society is in and needed to make an assumption, you would assume that something catastrophic like a huge war happened recently.

But then you would realize that it's too catastrophic for even a war. They have astronomic abortion, suicide, drug, prostitution, child abuse, violence rates etc... their youth is totally demoralized and Russia experienced one of the greatest brain drains ever.

And then you would finally get the answer and discover what communism is and what it did and how it even betrayed itself and gave way to a nihilistic, immoral, turbo-capitalist mafia state. And your leaders adopted the values of someone who was your ideological enemy and your leaders were more terrible and greedy than the worst soviet propaganda about the West.

Life in Eastern Europe must feel like bizarro world.

would the soviets have been better off trading DDR for a neutral united Germany and better relations with the west?

Poles had been undermining their occupiers and craving freedom during the 19th century then when they were granted freedom they immediately set about reinforcing it and looking at Britain, France and America as examples. A man would fight the soviets under Pilsudski then raise his sons in his values and 20 years later they'd fight the nazis. Soviet propaganda was a failure and most people saw straight through it.

Well, that was precisely Stalin's offer. The west wasn't interested.

>Liberalism.
What?
Just look at Hungary, it slid back to Authoritarian dicksucking pretty quick.
>>

This, as a Hungarian this is a backwards shithole place, liberalism will never take root here.
