Unions are tied to a certain amount of capital. Sometimes for growth, for a given amount of capital, you need greater labor inputs, which is when unions are willing to expand. Otherwise, they don't want to compete with newcomers for access to the same capital.

It's easier to understand a union as a quasi-co-op or pseudo-social control of capital. Their high wages come from their exclusive access and use of capital.

At a given factory in a small town? No. You can't fit a million workers in on little factory.

When you're a rural agrarian bumfuck shithole with no industry? No. Capital doesn't grow on trees.

That's why socialism is supposed to come after capitalism. Capitalism has to do it's job creating industrial capital first.

Unions aren't just collectivized negotiation magic. Unions are an attempt to exert worker control over capital, even if they don't own it. It's half way socialism.

>I tell her that I'll continue to do my job to the best of my ability, and if that isn't good enough I'm prepared to offer my resignation

And that's how it's done, folks. You say what you have to say and then get on with your life, you don't wait years and years paying people to quibble over contract verbiage. The problem is that losing a job of a terrifying prospect for many people, because it risks leaving their families homeless. Once we fix that, everyone can experience the glorious freedom of working on your own terms.
