I consider myself a history buff but I know embarrassingly little about this country. Is there a good book for an overview of Chinese history so I know the basics of all the dynasties?

I got my Chinese history from all over the place but for Chinese philosophy, you should read both volumes of de Bary's "Sources of Chinese Tradition".
books that "overview" china skip over so many things, especially the small whimsical stuff that takes the fun out of chinese history.

xian is the centre of the world
anything north of the yellow river is mongs

north korea IS china
anything north of that is manchuria
manchuria could have owned the eastern sphere if it were not for the anglo

check out zomia and the art of not being governed to learn the borderlands between the worlds 2 population powers
chinese are brainwashed but so is any other population, theres is just more uniform
asians are a tier 2 race between caucasian and negroid
Anyone have good reading lists for each dynasty and time period?

China: A History by John Keay is good for an overview of the major dynasties of Imperial China but very little on the Republic and the People's Republic, while China: A New History by John King Fairbank is less detailed on Imperial China but has a lot to say about the Republic onwards.
