Marcus had it pretty swell for the first half of his reign. Gallienus had his father captured by the Sassanids and in a number of years watched two of his sons, made Caesar to try and bring some since of order, murdered by mutinous generals. The entire empire fell apart around him despite every effort he made to salvage the situation and all he got out of his work was constant rebellion and betrayal and murder at the hands of Illyrians.
