How would a legion of Roman troops from Trajan's Dacia campaign fare against a force of late Western Roman troops?

Trajan era Romans.

>>2729755
why
>>2729779
because the late legions were full of g*rmans
>>2729779
because the late western roman troops are a husk of that era
the empire and its legions had, you know, like, declined and stuff.
>>2729790
But were the legions worse fighting forces? It seems more that civil unrest and invasions from all angles were the real reason the Empire was in decline. Julian and Valentinian successfully led legions against invaders

Trajan Era
>shitty lorica segmentata that is popularized today for the same reason it was popularized then: it looked cool
>lol no pants
>literally only real battle experience of note was the Dacian campaign where Roman tin men bullied a bunch of stinky barbarian niggers armed with woad tattoos and curved swords
>>2729779
Because late era Romans would not have made the proper sacrifices or performed the proper rites to ensure victory. You at least have to give praise to several different war or luck Gods to ensure victory. This is how Rome became an empire that dominated the known world.

How is Lorica Segmentata shitty compared to stuff like cheap mail armor.
>>2729807
>friction between mail naturally counteracts some corrosion, making hamata far easier to mantain
>individual plates are a logistic headache and are much harder to keep track of rather than a single shirt of mail
>when factoring in cost efficiency and overall longevity hamata and segmentata don't have much variance in overall combat effectiveness

A VERY GOOD OFFERING WAS MADE TO NEPTHNE
>who would win, this army or the same army 500 years into the future?
Late Romans would absolutely destroy earlier Roman armies. If only because of one simple factor.
The Late Romans' armaments had changed in part because earlier legionaries weren't very well equipped to deal with cavalry.
Meanwhile, the Late Roman legions had a massive amount of cavalry compared to troops of Trajan's era. A legion under the command of Stilicho or Aetius would have 1 cavalry troop for every 4 infantry troops, while Trajan would have 1 cavalry troop for every 72 infantry troops.
Also if we're talking about the whole army then the Late Roman army was like 4 or 5 times the size of the army from Trajan's era.

This is discounting the fact that the Late Roman army was also far superior logistically and in terms of training and equipment.

Good point. I think too that because most people associate the Dark Ages and Antiquity with slow technological change, they think that means NO technical change. Rome's tactics and strategies changed immensely generation by generation. From Marius's reforms to Augustus's, to the Lorica Segmentata... so much change happened in the Roman's history.

Pretty sure Domitian had been sending supplies and gold to the Dacians as part of a peace treaty (apparently artisans as well). Also Dacia was rich in mines back then and the money Trajan took in the wars refilled the treasury.
