Colonialism isn't about what the natives want. It's about what wealth the Imperial power can extract from the colony.

The main reason the American revolution happened for instance was that America retaining wealth was incompatible with the fact that colonies are what the colonizer is supposed to extract all the wealth from. Likewise France did not want Algerians to have prosperity, they wanted to extract prosperity from the Algerians to enrich themselves. It was the same with not only Frances other colonies, but with every other countries colonies as well.

The French desperately wanted to regain their lost glory after WW2 and for them that meant retaining their colonies, it's why they forced the US to let them have Vietnam again. Algeria also had over a million Pied Noirs and they were essentially planning to make it an integral part of France. Problem was they still had an exploitative relationship between the natives and the Pied Noirs and they didn't try civic nationalism until it was far too late.

The big part is that you get in Africa's case resources to make much more expensive finished products, ports of trade, a population base you can sell to once you determiner that the colony can get it (invest the bare minimum that they are able to use your goods), guaranteed domination of the colony market, very cheap access to agriculture and cash crops, cheap worker base. Indirect benefits.
