The STEM masses are meant to be specialists, who put their field and work above caring for themselves. Not to mention the even more unkempt menial workers of old who are below even them.

Philosophy, self-care, and well-roundedness are reserved for the privileged elite who can afford it. Equality is a lie, a utopia, not everyone can be privileged; the menial, economic, and technical workers provide the mechanical progress and luxuries that allow the philosophers and elites to thrive (or even just enjoy their life).

Let's at least allow them this self-delusion about their own importance and worth, as well as their modern day comforts and luxuries. These things stifle them, and help reduce the amount of resentment they feel towards the privileged, the healthy, the cultured. If you let resentment get out of hand, or even antagonise it yourself (because you have lost sight of better things to do), you'll end up on their guillotine a la French Revolution.
