Why were the Soviets so opposed to religion?

I'll concede that I don't know much about Soviet political impetus nor ideology, but I do know that they suppressed religious freedom and pretty much cleared the country of religious items (at least as much as they could). What was the rationale behind this? What kind of ideology conflict happened between the church and the state?

If I had just taken over a country, I would get in bed with the church and Russian identity. Russia until the Soviets was a /Holy Rus(sia)/ and that was definitely a big part of their claim to being the Third Rome. The church and state were definitely close to each other in pre-Soviet Russia.

“Thus, the history of nations teaches us the necessity of the Union with Christ.”
—Karl Marx, age 17

“The leaden world holds us fast And we are chained, shattered, empty, frightened, Eternally chained to this marble block of Being, … and we—We are the apes of a cold God.”
—Karl Marx, age 19

"The hellish vapors rise and fill the brain,
Till I go mad and my heart is utterly changed.
See this sword? The prince of darkness sold it to me. -
For me beats the time and gives the signs.
Ever more boldly I play the dance of death." [p.12]

The major and maybe only significant difference between Fascism and Socialism is that Socialism requires a population devoid of identity be it national or religious or sexual even.

So by promoting mass equality the Soviets could make their people as homogenous as possible due to the need for the state to choose people randomly instead of having them earn it by merit and so they have to be perfectly blank and willing.

Soviet Russia was taught not to 'care' about anything other than the party, to not follow anyone who wasnt the party, to not think of anything the party didnt tell them. Socialism works best when the society is absolutely terrified and pessimistic of the future. Capitalism for would instead rely on certainty and happiness.

Matthew 6:23 But when your eye is bad, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!

Jude 1:6 And I remind you of the angels who did not stay within the limits of authority God gave them but left the place where they belonged. God has kept them securely chained in prisons of darkness, waiting for the great day of judgment.

Christianity preaches that you should disregard this life and prepare yourself for an eternal state of happiness in the next. This does not run well with Marxists who don't believe in an after life ( most of them atleast ). To them it's a "slave morality" and Christians should be "freed" from it.

Give up all hope and comply!
Once in power they might realize some people not giving up properly

Marxist theory holds that religion is a control mechanism that keeps the lower classes down. This is absolutely correct. Unfortunately, the Soviets, instead of liberating people, just imposed a secular religion - communism - in the place of Christianity.
>>
Church authority was often intertwined with state authority, often taking a support role to the state. If one wants to fucking with the czar, fucking with the church is part and parcel of the equation.

>"Citizens of the USSR are equal before the law, without distinction of origin, social or property status, race or nationality, sex, education, language, attitude to religion, type and nature of occupation, domicile, or other status."

-Article 34 of the Constitution of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics

Communism is an economic theory, based on the concept of community ownership rather than individual ownership. It says nothing about promoting atheism or eliminating religion.

>Under the doctrine of state atheism in the Soviet Union, there was a "government-sponsored program of forced conversion to atheism" conducted by Communists.[6][7][8]

The Constitution was just for show, dude. C'mon.
>>
>The vast majority of people in the Russian empire were, at the time of the revolution, religious believers, whereas the communists aimed to break the power of all religious institutions and eventually replace religious belief with atheism. "Science" was counterposed to "religious superstition" in the media and in academic writing.

more like church authority could impinge upon state authority and the totalitarian oligarchs weren't having that

>The church and state were definitely close to each other in pre-Soviet Russia.

This has a lot to do with it. Communist ideology is almost always staunchly secular or explicitly atheist. This also matters in the context of the USSR.

Stalin was raised by his deeply religious mother, and was educated at a jesuit seminary.

Much of his temper and intolerance matches that of the religious teachings
>>
It switches the foundation of their belief system, culture, and value system from being a good person and living with others to being productive.

Depends on the constitution
Russian Constitution of 1918 was followed to the letter, mostly because it didn't really promise or guarantee much. 1924 USSR constitution had more or less compulsion but was violated considerably at the local level. 1936 is when all pretense was thrown out the window.
The 1977 constitution, an attempt to return to a functional constitution, ended up going sideways when folks noticed the legal right to secession, which actually ended up used.
