Why did Korea choose to isolate itself from the outside instead of opening up to new advancements like Japan during the 19th century?
well the Japanese had to fight a frigging civil war before they could agree to open up to advancement

>choose to isolate itself from the outside
Korea has been the bitch of Japan and China since forever. Its only been in the last 50 years that they've begun to have any sort of independence at all.

But they did isolate themselves due to their fear of catholics.

sources? especially for the former? Korea was firmly within the sinosphere, but what records do you have on Korea begin in Japan's sphere of influence aside from the late 19th - early 20th century?

well if you look at the current state of christianity in s. korea, maybe their fear wasnt so irrational after all

Weren't the catholics also trying to overthrow the Japanese leadership?
The fear isn't completely unfounded. Not to mention the infamous Taiping rebellion that sought to kill all other religious movement in the China that weren't Christians.

>End up with shitloads of screeching Protestant cults who are prone to establishing profit generating churches.

Fun fact: because of the Japanese.
Nip pirates and the Nip invasions of 1590s convinced Gooks there's not much to be had by contact with foreigners. (weirdly, China is exempted from this.)
There was also fear of western intrusion and as such, the ban on Catholic missionaries and the execution of their converts.
Didn't really do them much good though: the Manchus burst in and promptly made them a Qing protectorate.

I really have no idea where this fear of missionaries came from in East Asia both in Japan, Korea, and in Vietnam, MOST ESPECIALLY in Korea and Vietnam since Japan initially accepted them in.
Those two literally copied everything Chinkdom but while Ming China invited loads of western Missionaries in, Korea and Vietnam shunned them.

To be fair, they didn't have much of a choice when it came to China. They were basically their only trading partner because of their location, and China made sure to keep them terrified and offering tribute. Nothing ever good came from consorting with Japan. It was either constant fear of invasion, or pirate attacks.
