Why is it that whenever Balkanites write about any old engagement with the Turks, from a border skirmish to an Ottoman ambush of a Balkan militia to a raid, it always somehow involves tens to hundreds of thousands of Turks?
>>2701072
Because only Russians can compare to the zerg rushing prowess of the Turks.
>>2701085
Maybe the Balkanites were just exaggerating?

Inflating numbers to make your opponents seem scarier and your own armies seem more impressive is hardly unique to any one culture or group.

not as much as youd think
ottoman armies were mostly barefoot force recruited plebs and tribal fighters dragged up from across the empire, vasals and mercenaries and such, often the only thing that kept the army together was that they were mostly muslims and sharp wooden pikes act as good deterants
sure there were allways loads of spahis and similar light cavalry, and janissaries were norm, but mostly it was just poorly armed random people from 16 to 60 - and these were often used as meatshield or simply to run the enemy down trough having to cut trough a horde of useles opponents
so battles where a couple thousand battlehardened balkan bastards btfo some 20000+ ottoman army wasnt that rare, battles where some 20000+ ottoman army completely steamrolls a couple thousand balkaners wasnt rare either, it was mostly highlander guerrilla fighting with lots of hit and miss

It's balkan damage control

Dumb and false post

no it was pretty much normal
asimetric warfare and so on

Well the biggest battles did involve over a hundred thousand men on one side. But the raids were obviously much smaller in scale.
Fun fact: most of the Turkish raids into the Austrian Empire were done by Serbs and Bosnians.
>>2703780
And defended by Serbs on the other side of the border. Pretty much all small scale border clashes were Serbs vs Serbs.
>>2703787
what happens when serbs stop fighting each other owo?
>>2703792
They can't, disunity and infighting is inherent in the Serbs. The only two things Serbs agreed on in the past century was defending against Austria-Hungary in WW1 and defending against the USA in 99.
Which is why one of the myths pushed by everyone that "Serbs were genocidal maniacs who wanted to exterminate everyone in the 90s" The draft turnout in Serbia for the wars in Croatia and Bosnia was 13% and Milosevic broke constant protests with brutal force, and the government let people out of prisons and sent them to loot and pillage.
Whereas the draft turnout in 99 was 93%, and even people who Milosevic had been accusing for almost a decade as "traitors and american spies" were fighting in Kosovo.

Some Wikipedia articles show the ottomans having shitload of soldiers when they even didn't have the population to support that number.
