so i was listening to Come On Eileen while high and I suddenly got a strong urge to move to Ireland. Tell me the history of this beautiful nation-state (just clearing up I mean even before they separated from the UK, though that is a subject I don't know). I think they were christenized before England around the 500s, though maybe some Northumbrian kings had been baptised before that, right?

They were ruled by their own native system of Kings at first, all operating under a High King who had nominal authority over them. They defeated the Vikings in the early 11th century, but were invaded by the Normans about 200 years later. The invasion of the Normans meant that the English monarch was nominally the "Lord of Ireland" but the native Irish aristocracy continued to regard themselves as Kings and the new Norman Lords joined in the fun. The various Irish and Norman Lords engaged in wars amongst themselves, but in the end the Normans were thoroughly Hibernisied and the authority of the English monarch didn't extend outside a small area on the east coast of the island.
In the 16th century the English monarchy decided to try and enforce their authority in Ireland to a greater extent and this resulted in both the native Irish and the descendants of the Normans allying against them, leading to a conflict called the Nine Years War. The Irish came very close to winning the war, England had been practically bankrupted and their government was in disarray, but internal conflicts and a string of strategic mishaps meant than the English gained the upper hand and won in the end.
In the middle of the 17th century the Irish rebelled again, this time managing to establish their own independent Kingdom for a few years, but they were eventually defeated again and English rule was again strengthened.
The 19th century saw the Great Famine, and a massive decline of native Irish culture.
There would be two more major periods of rebellion, one in the late 18th century and one in the early 20th century, the latter being the one that finally succeeded, giving birth to the Irish state as it exists today.
The Irish throughout their history have been regarded as excelling at soldiery, religious scholarship, literature, horse breeding, sailing, and hospitality, and were often noted as having a unique appearance in terms of their style and dress (pic related)

Neat
They dicked around for thousands of years, then wrote some texts, then wrote some poetry.
Not the most proactive european nation, but certainly quite beautiful and learned.
