What are some books that you'd recommend for someone fairly ignorant of history? I'd like to learn as much as I can about anything from ancient times up to the recent past.
Thank you anons.

Will and Ariel Durant's The Story of Civilization
Best high-school text book out there.
Also, Collapse of the Third Republic by William L. Shirer is a good read if you're into the interwar and early WW2 period.

I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for but "Stalingrad" and "The Battle of Berlin" by Antony Beevor are really gripping accounts of WW2 events that don't require too much prior knowledge and generally got me into history. I'd recommend them to anyone who wants to learn about the period and doesn't know much already.

* "The Fall of Berlin 1945" instead of "The Battle of Berlin" , sorry.
you've got to specialize man. Unless you're going for some jack of all trades approach
