The shape has a religious significance. Kris weren't just weapons, they were often used as symbols of spiritual power. The blade was supposed to contain all elements, so the shape imitated water to show that.

Theoretically, it also means the blade has more surface area, which means a longer cutting surface. But that doesn't seem to be what Indonesians themselves thought it of it. It's a purely cultural thing.

How do you get a spearhead onto a stick? The only way I know of fixing metal to wood is the axe way, i.e. wrapping the metal firmly around the wood/sanding the wood so it fits snuggly into a metal socket and then expanding the wood with another piece of metal so it holds the head in place.

But how do you do that with a spearhead?

This is why you usually only see the 'final boss' with one. They must take a lot of skill to weld properly but also to survive with. Once you made your strike, then what? Were they always used with a shield? Were they ever used in conjucntion with a sword, duel-welding if you know what i mean?

For antiquity I like the Seax, because I'm a Germaniaboo and like the get-close-and-tear-shit philosophy that was pretty common then
For the Middle Ages I've got to say the Sidesword/Cutting Rapier/Spada da Lato because thrusting swords are OP and beautiful
For Early Modern I'm going to say the Baskethilt Broadsword because I like singlestick and boxing and the method of fighting in both of them is ultra practical and fun for sport.

>No wonder the Philippines got COLONIZED so hard.
Lmao, most of the Spanish Conquest in the Philippines was done by Natives themselves. Spain got BTFO initially whenever they went up against the larger tribal confederations and kingdoms- most particularly Muslim Filipino once. So they got gud and basically offered a conversion for protection scheme to the weaker tribes, with the retention of privileges of any converting native noble. And within the latter half of the 16th Century united a large bunch of Flip cunts under them enough to make a military solution viable. Even then there were still failures North with the Headhunters and South with the last remaining Flip Muslim Sultanates.

Hence the popular saying in Filipino Historiography: "The Philippines was conquered by the cross, not the sword."

In fact the early Spanish Colonial Military in the Philippines was barely European. Maybe a small force less than 5000 was from Europe during the 16th century. But the rest of the army was filled with local boys. Most of the commanders were christianized native chieftains and most of the soldiers natives who still used a lot of local gear, largely because they were just plain fucking useful in the locale they were in. There were even Chinese sailors, marines, and Japanese Christian Ronin exiles. Both with their own weapons.

The average early colonial soldier in the Philippines would be a native cunt with his native weapons, and bits and pieces of european kit like a breastplate, a western musket, or a rodela shield. Or even nothing European at all, maybe just a surcoat over his native get-up declaring his loyalty to the King of Spain and the Catholic Faith.

contd. a European model army wouldn't really show up in the Philippines until the late 18th Century rolled by. Even then large numbers of traditional warriors now relegated to the auxiliaries ("cuadrilleros") made up most of the colonial fighting force. Some of the line companies were even made up of archers, who deployed in the battlefield as if they held muskets kek.

The funny part was that the modernized force got btfo easily compared to the auxiliaries. When the Seven Years War came to the Philippines, the British BTFO the shit out of the modern European force in Manila. Spanish colonial rule was basically saved by native auxiliaries and the Archbishop of Manila rallying them north of Manila. The Brits tried to get the Flips on their side, but the native nobles and their subjects were staunchly Catholic and were disgusted at any notion of being subject to "heretics." and promptly waged a guerilla war with almost nothing but native weaponry that penned Britain inside Manila.

I would say more like the contrary, the point of it was to use it in very close quarters, a short sword (like a gladius) or a long poignard would be more related at his job than any other spear. The epitome of spear desing is the Pike, offense, protection of horses and you can bear lots of ponty ends while being safe.
>>2677933
The Falcata main difference with other forward curved swords of his time (and other similar desings like the Kukri) is than the falcata can STAB and CHOP/Slash at the same time. Look at the false edge of this beauty there, the equilibrium of the blade was so than stabing with it isn't that different than with a gladius, Iberians and celt-iberian loved to slash, but they true love was stabbing.

No see you spund like a fanboy. Your claims about that sword being particularly special are dubious to me basef on th fact that i signaled another sword, the kopis, that looks exactly the fucking same save for the handle.

Srsly, what can a falcata do that a kopis can't?

It's the same fucking sword

It isn't, the blade is different. The falcata has a false edge in the tip for stabing, than tend to run like one third of the blade. The equilibrium is different too. For example a Kukri has the balance in a different point to make choping easier and more powerful and doesn't have the false edge than runs from the tip a few inches.

Also that anon up there was right, falcata is a modern name, all the Iberian chopping swords were named Machaera by Romans at least, so "Spanish machete"

Nope, a Makhaira was a vicious choper/slicer, and you could stab with that, but it wasn't balanced for that. It was balanced to splice things.
For example,If you would draw a line from the pommel to the pointy end of the sword, it would be more or less an horizontal line, a greek makhaira or a kurki have a diferent kind of balance (and again, the false tip it's very rare).
>>
>>2686517
I didn't find a good hellenic makhaira pic, but they were more like Khukries, tough you can find some longer and thiner (probably cavalry weapons). A khukri is balanced to chop, is a weapon for splicing things.
You can put a Makhaira and Falcata in the same family (because they are) but they different for what they are designed to do, like if you would change the caliber of a 1911 from .45 to 9mm, you lose in some parts (stoping power/splicing) and gain in others (staby).

according to Wikipedia the Makharia's main and only consistent difference was that the blade was not canted forward and the body of the sword was roughly parallel to the grip, while the Kopis was identified by having such bend.

"Falcata" is a modern word to describe something specific that wasn't thought to be specific back then, the Romans just said "machaera hispana" because the only noteworthy fact about it was that it was the makhaira they knew, but in the hands of Iberians. Pointless to say it's something different.
