The Maya practiced cranial deformation, elongated the skulls, men and women did this a sign of beauty meant to reflect maize, which they believed is what originated humankinds body. And the maize deity was very important to them.

The Huastecs, also Mayan linguistically and to a lesser extent culturally, but more influenced by their gulf coast neighbors also elongated their skulls. Totonacs, Yopi, and Otomi also did this. Feathers, obsidian, jade, were all highly prized things to wear which only the wealthier people wore. The lower central americans in costa rica and panama prized gold. The Otomi, sometimes used beetles as ear ornaments and dyed their teeth black, as did the Huastecs. Maya inlaid gold or jade in their teeth, Aztec prostitutes dyed their teeth red and wore red paint on their lips. Aztecs regarded tattoos, paint and big piercings as degenerate, and criticized their neighbors often for this, like the Huastecs who wore large nose plugs, which the Aztecs saw as excessively sexual. Not just the aztecs. Snakes have been used significantly in ancient cultures across the globe. In fact the serpent is one of the oldest mythological symbols there is. To many Mesoamerican cultures, 'feathered serpents' represented a dual nature, Quetzalcoatl being the chief example. As a deity, it represented divinity and flight (the feathers), as well as humanity, crawling, close to the earth (the snake). Quetzalcoatl in particular was the god of wind and wisdom, also sharing a role in creation of the world.

From all this, i suppose you might say that the snake aspect represents us, perhaps signifying the human nature that we often find present in most pagan gods.
