Anybody else taken this plunge before?
I know he's a >journalist but this has to be the best historical account of this time period. The central figures are like well developed stage actors and WW2 unfolds before you like an opera. Highly recommended, and I'm only halfway through.
Bump. We all know /his/ is better than /lit/ anyway

Good book, but written 60 years ago.
There has been some development since, in terms of what documents we have, how the numbers are revised, and so on.

>Holocaust doesn't count
??? How does it not count?
And I mean also numbers like how many soldiers and equipment fought and in what condition. For example we now know that the german army invading Russia was in no condition to fight long before winter. After the initial push more than 90% of divisions were considered unfit for offensive duty, and only capable of defense or escorts.
Also he wrote this in a time where homophobia was acceptable, for example. And I don't mean /lgbt/ identity politics, I mean dismissing homosexuality as a crime or a low fetish only sick people have and such.
Its a book written with what was known in the day, by a person living in the day. Taken within its context its alright, just don't forget that context.
He calls Nietzsche an antisemite who continued the hateful traditions of Martin Luther.
That should tell you something about his grasp on philosophy.

When you finish it, Read Shirer's "Berlin Diary". It gives you an appreciation for the author's perspective. He covered the war from Germany prior to the US entering the war.
