Were wives really property and slaves that you were allowed to mistreat and boss around or is this just a modern feminist (being a wife is horrible)/misogynist (I wanna go back to the good old days of having a sex slave I can boss around whenever I want) exaggeration?

If you dont boss them around they go out of control.

thats nominally only because you drove them to such a state in the first place apparently

nothing is ever their fault

be a man and take responsibility of your own actions before you go declaiming others

The status of slave wasn't the same for every time or for every place and even under the same master slaves could hold diferente statuses.

But for a lot of women, yes, it was very much like being a slave.

Buying and kidnapping brides is still something that goes on in the world, though the kidnapping is mostly symbolic in most places now.

Depends on the specific culture and era, for example in the early US colonies women had a lot of power and rights because living on the fontier demanded it while their Puritan religion tolerated it (at least in comparison to other societies). However, as the colonies grew into urban cities of their own right, the cultural demands changed and stronger divisions between gendered labor increased. Hence why women were generally not allowed to work "mens jobs" (mining, construction, etc) back east while they could out west.

Also, the local ethnic makeup matters too. Women generally (again, comparatively speaking) had more rights in Dixieland because they'd be more capable of some forms of professional work than illiterate blacks. It also gave their husbands a much stronger reason to treat their wives nicely because if they ran off they could racemix and cause the man's honor to be completely ruined. Also, a man is more likely to treat his wife as an equal when they're surrounded by people of a different ethnicity. Familiarity breeds contempt.

depends on time and location
women are still little more than property in many arab and african countries even today

regarding europe:
strong gender roles were enforced, both by law, and by social approval/shaming, along with strict morality. this included no sex before marriage, no sex outside marriage, and strict lifelong loyalty between husband and wife.
husband has the lifelong duty of providing his wife (and children) with all necessities of life. wife has the lifelong duty of taking care of the family (children and elders) at home and supporting husband in his duties wherever possible. both have lifelong duty of absolute faithfulness - adultery was often punishable by death.
among peasants and farmers, the wife usually helped out on the farm work. the strict separation of "man at work, wife at home" primarily developed with division of labor and industrialisation - jobs became much more physically demanding and dangerous, so women would stay home while their husbands slaved away in the mines, furnaces and factories. during this period, women often did part time handywork and crafting (like weaving, sewing, etc) at home while the men did heavy industrial work.
during this time, the arrangement was very much in favor of women since it allowed them to benefit from the economic advantages of industrialisation without having to endure the back-breaking labor that was demanded of the workforce.
