Just to clarify, you are talking about swords that were made after the intrduction of the basket hilt, correct?

Well, obviously any form of closed guard is impractical on a two-handed weapon such as a long sword. It's extra weight and bulk which may or may not be worth the extra protection. It's also undesirable for cavalry who may have to swap weapons quickly.

It depends on the use of the sword really. For instance in a thrust-only environment, the basket-hilt isn't needed.
Big hilts tends to modify balance and therefore how cutting perform, you might want a lighter guard and so no big basket hilts so that the weight of the sword is more towards the tip.

Also, obviously such guards is useless if you have heavy gauntlets, large shield or a buckler, well not useless but redundant at least.
