They're officially recognized by India.

They are a social class upon themselves, not just a gender-identity, but a whole social order identity upon themselves. They've been seen as sacred/spiritual/etc in many of the Hindu literatures.

Even in the land of Muslim like Pakistan/Bangladesh, they're officially recognized as a third gender. That's the power/prevalence of their social class.
