They didn't. They've never been at war with Serbs before. They've worked together against Magyarization. A-H always worked on breaking Croat-Serb political coalitions.
Also, they're literally almost the same.
All of the problems were created in the troublesome union that was Yugoslavia. You apparently know very little about the actual ethnic relations and probably just heard one of those western TV explanations of "ancient hatreds", yeah, those hatreds are about 70 years old now, they're from WW1, before that it was a dislike and distrust, which is barely 1000 years old.

Because the Croats are Catholic Serbs or the Serbs are Orthodox Croats. They're the same people genetically.
