Stopped reading and started thinking right there.

The genius of Rousseau, which strikes me every time I read him, is the radically rural outlook he takes on life.

Most academics are reared in academia, which leads them to blindly attack his ideas as simplistic and lacking rigor. Really they're just so used to obscuring ideas in layers of reference and allusion that they can't appreciate pure thought. Reading Rousseau is almost like reading the Tao Te Ching, because rather than reference Plato to back up his ideas, he references human experience in it's most basic state, the sensations of a man in nature without the oppressive atmosphere of society.

I feel like he's set to make a big comeback in the next couple of years. Even though the academic establishment does everything they can to bury him, the originality of his thought has a fertility to it that cosmopolitan armchair critics like Voltaire just can't compare to.

They're not rigorous arguments, they're metaphors using subjects we can't possibly pretend to completely understand today.

When relating his thought to the actual reality of being human, of families, of growing up, of the difference between rural life and the debauchery and oppression of cities, and the discovery of the new world (specifically the political differences between "savage" and "civilized" people), it's obvious how brilliant he is.
