Has there ever been an instance in history where putting a bullet in someone's head/stabbing a sword through someone's gut actually changed things for the better?
More specifically, has it ever helped to take someone of whom lots of people say "He'd be better off dead" and actually kill him? It seems like a satisfying solution to a problem, but I've noticed it often only seems to make things worse.

assassination of caesar
Shaka probably. He went insane when his mother died. He prohibited the sowing of crops and the milking of cows, any woman who became pregnant was to be killed along with her husband, and he ordered purges which resulted in the deaths of over 7000 people. So when he was assassinated things pretty much immediately improved, though there would still be political turmoil and infighting for the next decade or so.
If you're a Christian, Julian's forgetting to put his breastplate on saved Christianity from fizzling out due to infighting.
