Based Napoleon, one of my favorite historical figures. I'm reading Andrew Robert's Napoleon the Great right now, so I recognized the quote.
Pic related tho, shows the whole story

How can one man be so based ?

Interestingly, novels were one area that women authors totally flourished, since it was a relatively new form without established cred. He wasn't alone in seeing novels as less worthy than histories or philosophical works.

Nor was he wrong. This is a point which deserves special emphasis.

Nor was he wrong.

Interestingly enough, Napoleon's favorite book was The Sorrows of Young Werther. He was obsessed with it in his youth and often carried it around with him.
>>
>>2633263
>>2633383
This is coming from the man who spent most of his time as a young officer reading angsty novels The Sorrows of Young Werther and going "wow, this is literally me." He brought the same book with him to Egypt and told a few people that he'd read it seven times.
Napoleon only said this later on because he was so embarrassed by his past he didn't want to be reminded of it. Literal chuunibyou.
>>
>>2633788
they regarded sitting around reading novels similar to how we denigrate people for watching mindless junk on tv

>Tolstoy on the same level as Flaubert

Flaubert is the French Henry James, Tolstoy is the Russian Tolkien.
>>
>>2633966
>>2633966
Capitalizing on them isn't bad by any means. That's why he was a middling commander and not a bad one--after all, mistakes are common. But being completely and utterly dependent on your enemies to fuck up means you end up getting crushed by another average commander like Wellington who had the sense to just be cautious.

In other words: Napoleon was a one trick pony, not a genius.

Ton histoire est très apprécié, mon frère.

Your argument is absolutely retarded. Middling strategists don't end up redefining the basis of military thought for the next two hundred years.

That is a question with almost as much depth as "What is the meaning of life" man, and the answers you get will probably tell you more about the person saying them than actual truth
(This sounds really goddamn psued but I couldnt think of a better way to phrase it)
>>
>>2633356
Why there would be one? That seems stupid. Both boards kinda complete each other.
>>
>>2633263
The dude lost in the end... not someone I want to take statesmanship advice from.

>>2633356
How can there be rivalries when you can post in both boards and nobody will realize?

I post in grand strategy general in /vg/, in /his/, /pol/, sometimes /int/, I visit /tv/ from time to time, particularly during the Oscars season. I don't really belong to a single board, although I have to say I feel like /his/ might be one of my favorites.

>tfw you remember the time before /his/ existed

Very sad times
>>
>>2634011
I find that novels that discuss romance as a theme are good but those that pander to romantic emotions are bad. For example, the Great Gatsby has a big theme of love but it doesn't give you a hard-on while you read. It just genuinely considers the topic.
>>
>>2634397
Name someone who won.
>>
>>2633383
I just read that! It's so good!

It's obviously written with a heavily pro Napoleon slant (there's a line comparing the basically politically motivated marriage between him and Josephine to the romance of Romeo and Juliet, and there isn't an atrocity commited that Roberts doesn't attempt to explain away) but that's exactly what makes it so fun. His affection is super infectious.

The roughest part is the return from Moscow (spoiler: it was bad) but it actually cheers up considerably through the end. Him returning from Elba before Waterloo is super exciting, and even his eventual exile at St. Helena is a lot of fun to read.

The guy who wrote it is a Tory, and in my experience (as a Marxist) reading dishonest conservatives is way more fun than reading dishonest Leftists. Once you pick up on his prejudices, the book becomes a lot more fun to read, because you can watch him sort of bullshit in real time as the narrative unfolds.

The promotional stuff makes a big point of Roberts visiting most of the battlefields where Napoleon fought, which I don't know if it gives him the incredible perspective they claim, but nonetheless makes the battles all the more readable. I have a hard time following the play-by-play of battles, but he does a good enough job of describing the broad strokes that they're enjoyable. The description of political intrigues is also really well done, illuminated by a bunch of Napoleon's letters which were recently released.

I get that you posted the OP as a bit of a joke, but it's true that the fact Napoleon read a bunch of history is one of the things that probably made his ascendency in the French military possible. (It probably also helped that everybody who might have been a general had just been guillotined in the French Revolution.) He also was one of a small number of people who took interest in artillery, which were increasingly becoming a decisive factor in contemporary battles.

Anyway enjoy
>>
>>2633902
this board is THE newfag board

the fact it was created recently meant it's just become an outpost for redditors and polnormies

>Identifying yourself with a board on an imageboard for Japanese cartoons.
Not saying you do this, but if you do then you should have a hard look in your mirror and think about where everything went to hell.

I visit 10 boards yet I'd never identify myself as one of those because a normal human bean don't use 4chan as an extension of their identity (as in, public identity) for several reasons, most so obvious I don't have to name them.
