The war ended before they could get to that. Remember, they only attacked Manchuria on August 9th, less than a full week before Japan's announcement of unconditional surrender (although sporadic fighting had been continuing past that, and also before the surrender itself was signed). And while the Soviets had advanced very quickly and easily, they had not steamrollered over every pocket of resistance, they used the sorts of mobile techniques they had developed in the war in Europe to bypass strongpoints, surround them, and batter them from much stronger positions.


Had the war continued though, it's a near certainty that the Soviets would have poured into "proper" China, and into Korea as well.

At what point in time? They probably couldn't afford a war on two fronts or a war if Japan in general.

Unlikely. Even before the Japanese invasion, the KMT had a problem similar to the U.S. in Vietnam; even after the final encirclement campaign and ousting the Commies from the southeast, they couldn't actually control the provinces allegedly pacified. I'm not entirely certain as to the cause of this failure, usually when you win the battle and march your troops through, you run the place. But the KMT allowed a power vacuum to develop, a couple of warlords rose up, and well, that was that. The Commies continued to get stronger during the second Sino-Japanese war, and were able even to orchestrate an abduction of Chiang himself in late 36.


I don't really think the KMT ever had a chance to defeat the Communists; they were completely lacking in the right kinds of power to win against an insurgency, and were rapidly eroding the ability to win conventionally as well.
