One thing I don't understand about Trench warfare is why it wasn't totally negated by artillery.
Surely if you have a fair amount of artillery you can simply shell the enemy trench until it's destroyed and advance?
1: it only kills if it falls right in a trench
2: one the infantry hear the first shells they will dart into their bunkers
3: trenches are zig zagged so even if you get a direct hit you might not kill anyone or just 1 sentry

Can somebody translate these moonrunes for me?

I'm not referring to killing the infantry but rather blocking up the Trench.

Not enough HE shells. Later in the war when they had enough, the trenches were adapted to defend in depth and craters left by artillery served as ad-hoc cover, limiting the effect.

This is a questions yhat any reading of WWI history would answer.

Trenches protect from artillery. That's why they hid in trenches and artillery decimated charges out of trenches.

Advancing over ground that has been shelled that heavily is very slow on foot, and even more crappy for anything that goes on wheels. Like anything for logistics or artillery. By the time you cross it, the enemy has dug new trenches.
