Has modern warfare shown that it is basically impossible to actually capture a modern city as long as the people defending it refuse to surrender?
>>

not really, plenty of cities have surrendered in modern war, most notable that comes to mind is the Warsaw Uprising, and other major cities Germany captured in battle such as Kiev and Sevastopol.

modern cities are still weak to the same effects as cities all through history, and that's the flow of supplies, in that a city cannot sustain itself when cut off from the outside world and the people face starvation from it. But if supplies and manpower are still able to flow into it such as Leningrad and Aleppo, then the fight goes on, and the rebel force in Aleppo surrendered because they were completely cut off by a siege where they ran out of both food and ammunition.

Nope. A couple high profile instances leave out all the times it did happen. And the "refuse to surrender" qualifier is retarded, because unless you're god awful at warfighting, you don't assault a city directly and fight the enemy to the last man, you encircle strongpoints and starve/bombard them out.

Even then, there's plenty of instances where it has happened like you claim. Had Operation Uranus not been launched when it was, Stalingrad would have fallen to the Germans - the Soviets only had a very small beachhead remaining. You also had the (first) siege of Sevastopol in 1941/42, where the fighting continued until Soviet forces were literally driven into the sea.

What made those instances you mentioned so significant in the first place was that the besieging forces were unable to effectively cut off the enemy from supply and reinforcement. Stalingrad is a great example of that - the Germans just marched in the west end of the city and couldn't do anything to prevent the Soviets from feeding troops across the Volga.

I'm just amazed these syrians have been able to keep fighting for this long. Its been like 4 years where are the supplies and food and manpower coming from?
>>

Iran, Saudis, Russia, America. Pretty much everyone involved in the region has a stake.

There's also probably a lot coming out of Iraq left over from the clusterfuck that started in 2003. Remember the reason the insurgency got so bad in the first place was that we fired the entire Iraqi army at once without any real plans to deal with a couple hundred thousand unemployed men with guns. A lot of equipment just kind of disappeared, and it's still causing problems.

I can not say much on the other on your list but I can say Aleppo may be a special case. Been keeping up on the matter on /k for some time. The main issue is that the Syrian army was pre-war a touch light on munitions stocks for its size. Then large amounts of that were destroyed by government forces because they feared they could not hold on to a number of key supplies sites. Then the sanctions happened, damage to domestic manufacturing, and some of the munitions/manufacturing falling into the other parties hands... End effect is a very limited supplies of artillery fire and air support to remove strong points. To make matters much easier to hold Aleppo, Syrian has some very strong building codes written with limiting the damage from air strikes in mind.
