What are some things in ancient historical/religious/mythological texts that historians assumed to be made up, that later turned out to be true?

The Great Flood. It was assumed to be one of those "completely made up as a legend" stories, but then archaeologists found proof of widespread flooding in Mesopotamia about 5,000 years ago. Sure, it's not exactly a world-ending flood that covered all the earth, but it shows that it did have basis in fact.

For what its worth the same myth is in a lotta native american mythologies too. My amateur theory is it could be a memory of ancient climate change but idk

I think it's funny that Alex is so concerned about pollution yet constantly shills for a guy who wants to completely eliminate the EPA.

It's funny that the EPA has been around for 46 years and we still have pollution.......................

>attaining lower pollution levels is an unrealistic, idealized alternative

Well then we don't need the EPA in either case. Either they are grossly incompetent and a massive money sink or their efforts are a waste of time anyhow.

I just had this conversation in another thread.
Floods are the most lethal and destructive natural disasters. They happen all the time and kill large numbers of people.

It's a Chinese conspiracy to get america to get on alternative energy, so the chinks get all the monopoly on earths energy. Trump is correct.

A lot of those are the result of diffusion from missionaries. It's pretty obvious because of how many of them are almost verbatim the biblical account. Native American mythology
was never written down, and it wasn't like people were opposed to adopting new stories.

In general, people make too much of the whole "every culture has a flood story" thing. Yes, lots of them do (lots, not all; people who make that argument always overstate this), but most people also live in places where flooding is common or where climate change had a serious effect on the environment at some point. And Christian missionaries have been spreading the story to different groups for a seriously long time.

Don't most historians think Gilgamesh was likely a real person now?

The whole civilization talked about in the Iliad, really. Remember, they found Mycenae too.

Hittites.

Atheists used to think Hittites were just a biblical myth.

Then archeologists actually found remains of Hittite civilization.

And your point is what? When your entire "culture" compromises a few thousand individuals, even a small flood that wipes out a few hundred is pretty big. Now translate that over to our days, floods barely kill a couple hundred people worldwide a year.
