Did the Founding Fathers actually believe in stuff like "equal rights", "freedom of religion", "free press" etc, or was that only a convenient position to take in order to resist the monarchy?

Bump. Anyone who has an opinion on the subject please provide sauce, seems like it could be interesting.
>>
A thread died for this

You dumbass just think about the fact that they instituted all those ideals into the foundation of the country

If they didn't believe in them they wouldn't have

/thread

I don't understand?
Are you saying that if they didn't believe in the states ideals they wouldn't have... what? Founded America?

Don't /thread after you spout random shit.
>>
>>2588176

At first only wealthy white land owners were even allowed to vote so clearly they had some reservations about their might democratic ideals
>>
The Enlightenment was a mistake.
>>
Yes.

America was founded on Biblical principles, God-given rights and freedom of religion.

They knew the problems that plagued Europe and wanted to avoid that shit.

Stupid white hating leftist ass

Ignorant little shit

Freed slaves could vote in four states. Right from the start. And yes in SOME states only white land owners could but that barred a lot more whites than blacks.

American education ruined you didn't it?

This.

Puritans escaped the old, war-ridden dark Europe with its Roman Catholic tyranny and "Enlightenment" atheist fedoraism in order to start a new glorious nation which would later become the most powerful in the world.

It's like God blessed them. Really makes you think.
>>
problem with the "founding fathers are elitist douchebags" and the "founding fathers were gods" theory is that people believe they were a hivemind.

some really cared and brought to hearts the enlightened ideals of liberty and equality
some were in it for the fame and fortune
some wanted power
some were just going with the flow

and a lot of them hated each other and the states they came from.

The "equal rights" they referred to had to do with the "titles" and "royalty" bullshit that existed in the U.K. and Europe at the time. They wanted to get rid of the concepts of "royalty" altogether in the U.S., so that merit had a bigger influence than birth. They did NOT mean that "everyone is equal", because we're not, and this can be demonstrated by the fact that they had no problem using black African savages for slave labor, keeping women out of government, and creating strict voting standards for men that required property ownership.

The "freedom of religion" revolved around the Christian religion, and was a direct response to the Church of England being the "official" church of the state. They had NO problems with states barring other religions from public service, which is exactly what they did.

The "freedom of the press" ensured that people would be allowed to criticize their leaders. No brainer, really. Too bad that freedom is used for propaganda purposes instead of telling the truth.

The bottom line is that people have been interpreting the founding fathers original words to support their own agendas ever since.

Seeing as they didn't turn right around and go full Euro-court themselves, we have good reason to believe it wasn't for show. Basically they disagreed and debated on a ton of points but basic enlightenment thinking was pervasive throughout the group. Not to say there wasn't hypocrisy with the whole slave thing, but that wouldncome to a head later

Didn't the second president pass the alien and sedition acts?
>>

>and "Enlightenment" atheist fedoraism

The Enlightenment was the most important thing that led to the revolution
>>
>>2588162
They only believed in those rights for wealthy landowners.
>>
I think its always important to view historical events in the context it occurred. In this case, while it doesnt exactly look that egalitarian, it was the most revolutionary thing to happen to peoples relationship with government, liberty, freedom, etc...

That said the Founding Fathers were just humans and often had very different views. Some were as close to atheist as one could get to at the time, some were clearly in it for power, others thought slavery was a okay and others were average dudes who just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
