I think part of the problem with this is that Americans have spent so much time on the subject of transatlantic slave trade: Movies, books, TV shows, endless moralizing etc, that it has sort of entered in the collective consciousness as a sort of simulacrum. If that makes any sense. The antebellum south and slave trade that exists in the minds of contemporary Americans quite literally didn't exist.

As a result of this singular autistic obsession, whether through navel-gazing or self-flagellation or other reasons, Americans unironically believe the transatlantic slave trade was some morally sui generis event in the history of the world. That it was some sort of unparalleled evil. In a way it's a sort of reverse-eurocentrism. An obsession with fixating on the perceived crimes of Europeans

It's a testament to the power of modern telecommunications (mass media, entertainment) more than anything else. Imagine if all of the energy that had been spent on writing books, movies etc about Transatlantic Slavery had been instead spent on say.... The Forty Years War. I'm sure Americans would today consider that the most seminal and important moral evil ever perpetrated too.

It's the same sort of thing with apartheid. Through sheer fixation on the thing to the point that other points of reference and experiences that do not involve whites become obfuscated, it becomes the single most definable illustration of moral evil in the minds of the people who live within and experience that simulacrum of history.
