Their predecessors did the same and lasted centuries. The problem with mesoamerican civilizations is the droughts, since they deal with two seaons, dry and rain. It needs a careful balance, too much rain and you get floods, too much drought and you get famines. Nevertheless sometimes they endured harsh times if they struck. But sometimes, this helped lead to some societies collapsing as what happened with the classic period Maya. Human sacrifice was a reality of much of Mesoamerica, the Aztecs only committed it at a greater scale cause they had greater power. I guarantee if the Tlaxcaltecs were as large of an empire and that big they'd do the same too. And this meme that people were mad at the aztecs for the sacrifices needs to stop. They weren't mad for this reason.

The Aztecs were pretty fucked - most contemporary Indian tribes would have agreed. Its not like the Spanish conquered them out of compassion though. In fact they later enslaved many Indian tribes that helped them take down the Aztecs.
