Part of it was that the French household transitioned into a nuclear family model earlier than the rest of Europe, which tends to lower birth rates.

massive agricultural improvements in Britain, less so in France. Draining the fens on the Dutch model (begun in the 1600s, but had lasting effects), introduction of new crops, and enclosure of farms and increased private ownership. France, in contrast, retained traditional communal agriculture later.

By 1850, you also have to consider the effects of industrialization and empire, as Britain had a massive ability to ship in food from overseas and produse cheap sugar, tea, etc. for the proles.
