How successful was the SAS and in general, British special forces during the second world war?

Their first mission in Africa was a disaster, but overall they were very effective.

How are you defining "successful" in regards to special forces operations?
>>2563159
Completing their objectives and over all doing damage to the enemy.

Very, that's where their reputation (that they unwarrantedly retain nowdays exclusively thank to movies and video games although they're actually no better than other Western SFs anymore) come from

Fantastically. It's the only part of the British military that can be said to have done a phenomenal job in WW2, and was a model for all of the other commando forces in the world.
Just look at Operation Chariot.

In Africa they were initially tasked with destroying enemy aircraft. They destroyed about 60 enemy aircraft (with no casualties) in their first mission alone, using the trucks seen in that photo. They had quite the reputation among the Axis. They also served in Italy and worked with the French resistance behind enemy lines.
The founding member was Paddy Mayne, an absolute badass.
