Any Brazilians lurking on this board? Reading about the Thirty Years war I came upon a piece of information not present in school lectures: we (Dutch) apparently invaded Brazil and stayed there between 1630 and 1654. Is this relevant in your history classes? Do people know about this? What's the general consensus regarding these events?
Yes, we learn about that and you can still see dutch architeture in Pernambuco. In general people believe that our country would be better if the Dutch conquered everything because muh protestant ethics, but it's seems as interesting trivia mostly.
We learn it during school but since São Paulo was never affected by it it's mostly regarded as a minor event. I'd guess in Bahia or Pernambuco they learn more about it.

Where are you from? Is it true as >>2553163 said that people from non-affected states would just plough through such an event?

I'm from São Paulo too, don't know about the other states. But I would say the importance given to this subject at schools is fair considering the time dedicated to other subjects.
My state was briefly invaded by the Dutch, but the poorly-armed population chimped out and killed 38 dutchmen. Pic related is a bitch who threw boiling water and/or feces at them.
Perhaps Dutch Brazil would be just another Aruba but I don't think so. They wanted to settle, while the Portuguese were simply chasing after natural resources, which, to me, is the main reason of our country's problems nowadays.
Maybe they even left some living descendants, who knows? You might have some relatives here.
