Welfare is interesting because it is a multi-faceted problem and can be discussed economically, politically, racially, socially and domestically.

Have you considered mass killings, like school/church shootings, OP? Some existing literature has tried to analyze it in the light of Durkheim's theories about suicide, so you'd have some stuff to jump off from.

Why do westerners not study STEM subjects?
It's resulting in a decline in tech development in the west which is what put it on the map in the first place.
What about rising healthcare costs and how we're supposed to fund them. Are people entitled to subsidised healthcare? What if everyone needs it because we're all old and there isn't enough money to pay for it?
