In the period shortly after WWII Stalin exerted significant influence over a much larger portion of the globe and many more countries (including China itself) than Mao ever would. He also had a much larger economy and a much more powerful military at his disposal.

He can't be more powerful, because Mao idolized Stalin, also Russia was far more developed with many more nukes, control of Eastern Europe and the possibility to conquer the rest of it in 4 weeks, better space exploration tech, more puppet states etc... etc...
