Touissant Louverture and Dessaline were both slave owners, for example. Also, sugar plantation economies were always extremely cruel, whether in France or in Brazil and other Caribbean colony. The nature of sugar harvesting and processing made the process extremely labor intensive. Granted, I do think France had one of the harshest slave regimes, but French planters worked slaves so harshly out of pure economic calculation rather than out of some psychological flaw. In return, this is what made the colony so rich (rich, in the sense of its productivity and the bountifulness of the land that french planters extracted from it)

It was almost nonexistent in the Anglo-American slaveholding tradition. In Saint Domingue you had a significant black planter class, which was very strong in the southern part of the island that was still "frontierland" for new plantations. Basically, the infrastructure wasn't any worse than in Europe at the time where it existed and infrastructure improvement was accelerating during the last years of the colony. Equally important was the mountainous geography of the island, which made it all the more difficult to make a colony-wide road system. but even this was being overcome near the end. all this was a matter taken very seriously by the french authorities. pic related is an interesting read, though, so i recommend you take a look at it.

Simply false. Spain had higher revenues than France deep into the XVIII century. France went bankrupt after aiding the rebels in the US. Spain put more money in the war than France and repaid the loans faster
