How competent was the Third Reich in comparison to other authoritarian regimes of the past two-or-so centuries?

Was it really this iron-clad, well-oiled machine with no open disagreements or gaffes by major public figures? Or was this simply what Himmler, Goebbels, etc. wanted the world to think?

the third reich was extremely poorly run on almost every level. pretty much any good history book on the reich will explain as such

Yeah, the III Reich was so shit that can start a World War

At least try harder, shill.

this. hitler was mao-esque(or mao hitler-esque i guess) in wanting his underlings to constantly compete with each other, cut each other down to one-up themselves, and ultimately had a very inefficient and dysfunctional government.

There was a lot of infighting and backstabbing within the high ranks of the Nazis. This was by design, so Hitler's position could be safer and the regime would actually have a good source of dynamicism (contrast with Stalin being a control freak). While not a complete disaster, it was a way of doing things that simply could not be sustained in the long run.

On Hitler's managerial style, look for an essay called "Working Towards the Fuhrer" by Ian Kershaw. Nazis basically put shit together on the spot and if it fell to Hitler's good graces he retroactively made it legal.

The economy was ran decently until they decided to massively repurpose it towards war, more or less when Goering took over.

Get back to /pol/ if you want to glorify Nazis.

Hitler and the Third Reich was shit. End of story.

The only legitimate complaints was that there was a huge beaurocracy. Massive with lots of pay going to administrators. Similar to modern France and also similar to Austria-Hungary.

The other questionable(?) method was Hitler creating rivalries within the government to do the same job.

For example:

Goebbel's was the Minister of Propaganda and public enlightenment. Propganda back then didn't have a negative connotation by the way. Rosenberg was head of the Reich culture Chamber. And another fellow, whose name I can't remember, may have been Mueller or something, was in charge of Wehrmacht propaganda.

So no matter which job Goebbels wanted he always had a competing office doing the same job. Rosenberg competed with him in music and art. The wehermacht guy in propaganda, and some guy in the foreign office also controlled press conferences.

Economy was devided up between Goerring and Hjalmar Schacht and later Von Frick.

They all had to manage the economy and when heads butted they would go to Hitler.

It meants that Hjalmar Schact had to put up with Goerrring despite Schact being a genius for economics, and Goerring, being also genius, but lazy and more ideologically driven.

It meant Goebbels couldn't real in the UNTERMENSCH propaganda campaign Poland and Russia. Which was also costly.

Yeah, it was so well run that they had to have peacetime rationing of food back in 1937!

It was pretty good for a minor power and kinda sloppy for a world power. It was in that awkward spot between the two. A smaller power that's punching above it's weight class can't afford the same missteps.

But like all autocracies, you need to set a pretty specific date. A tyranny depends on the leader, and leaders change over time. Early Hitler wasn't the same guy as Meth Hitler.
