Thought I'd make a new thread dedicated to making and sharing charts. It can also double as a book discussion thread. Unfortunately I'm back in school so I don't think I'll be making so many this week. But I encourage other anons to pick up the slack. If /lit/ and other boards can make their own content to share, we should be able to as well desu. Don't be afraid to discuss and share your thoughts about books you're reading or have read.

If you want to try you're hand at making charts on a particular theme or time period, but don't know what books to use, I recommend taking a look at my pastebin filled with tons of oxford bibliographies:

http://pastebin.com/u/jonstond2

It's tedious work combing through these and find the works you want, but maybe try to narrow your focus so small time periods, particular historical events (e.g. russian revolution, thirty years' war) or narrow themes (e.g. medieval peasant clothing or some random thing like that)

Some recommended topics to look into:
Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth, Prussia, Scandinavia, Vikings, Anglo-Saxon England, Medieval and Dark Age Ireland, French Revolution, American Revolution, Civil War, the Crusades

Even easier, I've already found a lot of works on particular subjects but I'm too busy to organize what I have and cut down material to a level acceptable to fit on a chart. You can to make charts on this stuff before I eventually get to it! Also don't hesitate to make charts from some of these lists:

this one looks relevant
Brogi, Alessandro. Confronting America: The Cold War between the United States and the Communists in France and Italy. Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2011.
>Brogi argues that political opposition in France and Italy forced the United States to reconsider its strategies to combat communism, its image, and what its “liberal capitalist culture and ideology” meant. Conversely, he argues that the resistance to Americanism by Italian and French Communist Parties provided a test for their “legitimacy and existence.”

I want to get into Chinese literature more. What confucian texts are worth reading? I thought I would share what I've read so far.

>The Tragedy of the Templars: The Rise and Fall of the Crusader States by Michael Haag
This book was alright. I learned a good bit about the crusades and the Templars. It could've been better if it focused more on the Templars though.

>Carthage Must Be Destroyed by Richard Miles
A great book that gives an overview of the Punic Wars and the relations between the Roman and Carthaginian empires.

>Yugoslavia: Death of a Nation
So much shit happens in this book. It's wonderful. It's kinda like a gigantic convoluted drama with tons of characters. I found myself wanting multiple people on opposing sides of the wars to succeed. The main problem with this book is that it doesn't really catch you up to the modern day situation in the Balkans. Also, it's completely unsympathetic to the Serbs. I'm not sure if this is justified or not. Some Serbs on 4chan have claimed they were justified in the wars. Anyways, it was a great book.

>The Cold War: A New History by John Lewis Gaddis
Probably the most well written book on history that I've read so far. It gives an overview of the entire Cold War. I loved reading this book. Instead of being a completely chronological account of the "war", it went through different areas of the war, but still remained mostly chronological. I wish the book spent more time on the ending of the war though. I felt like more could be said about Gorbachev, Reagan, and Thatcher. It just felt a little rushed towards the end. Also, I'm not sure if this is a bad thing or not, but the author is not sympathetic towards communism at all. That's probably justified, but I can understand that some more open minded people might be taken aback by that.

Didn't I show you which bibliographies to look at last thread...? If you want some more personal recommendations, Richard Rex's "The Tudors" is a short nicely written introduction on that dynasty. It has the advantage of giving a coherent view of England over the 16th century. John Guy's Tudor England is a general survey but you might get drowned in the details. Alan Smith's "The Emergence of a Nation State, 1529-1660" I found it a better laid out survey. It also has the advantage of covering from Henry VIII all the way to Cromwell. Guy's survey has the advantage of starting from Henry VII's victory at Bosworth 1485 through Elizabeth I's reign, with constant reference to the Wars of the Roses and the long-term that it set in motion before the Tudors (e.g. emasculation of the nobility through attainder, enforcement of feudal dues, and such). Anyway, if you're not the guy from the last thread, I can just give you the bibliographies you need for these subjects.
>>
>>2528857
I also recommend reading "What Hath God Wrought," which covers the period between the 1810s and the 1850s. I liked Glorious Cause and Battlecry of Freedom but the book above gives fantastic coverage of a period that's relatively neglected in US history.

I tried but dropped it pretty quick because Howe's biases were completely overriding. Jackson etc. were evil (really the US in general) and the Whigs were pious and virtuous and if only they'd done been allowed more chances they could've saved the United States and thus the world from those vile Democrat rascals.

I'm not even a fan of Jackson but goddamn.

By comparison, Wood is clearly biased towards the Jeffersonians but I never feel like Empire of Liberty is an anti-Federalist screed. I mean Wood spends most of a chapter examining in detail the Alien & Sedition Acts in a fairly reasoned way that makes them look much more reasonable if eventually overreaching (but with a logical mindset to their creation) which is pretty surprising.

yeah i agree is anti-jackson, but i thought the information about the communications and transportation revolutions, the diversity of christian sects, the cultural regions of america, cultural and scientific developments were good. he also doesn't have much to complain about monroe, van buren and polk (despite his reservations about his expansionism and manifest destiny). Tyler is treated bad and zachary taylor isn't.

>Wood is clearly biased towards the Jeffersonians
i haven't gotten that far i got to the rise of the democratic-republicans. but when i was reading i got the impression that jefferson, and to a lesser extent monroe, didn't have realistic ideas of governance as opposed to hamilton's elitist, but proven (in england), model.

Yes I am. I tend to be busy at work and I have missed checking back on responses. But thank you and I'll check back on your last response. Like I said, I'm not a historian, so when going through bibliographies, it is a bit overwhelming because I don't know the scope of what the author will cover, biases, or important bits of info that are omitted that are crucial to better understanding the topic. Most books I have gone on to buy from /his/'s recommendations that have had personal reviews have turned out to be spot on and it helps non-historians like myself decide to read on a topic or not.

Tl;dr This response helps me more than a link to general bibliographies as an amateur.

the romanian works in that pic would focus on codreanu a lot, but not exclusively i suppose this book though has an essay dedicated solely to codreanu:

Haynes, Rebecca, and Martyn Rady, eds. In the Shadow of Hitler: Personalities of the Right in Central and Eastern Europe. London: I. B. Tauris, 2011.
>Eighteen new essays, almost all focused on an individual figure. Although one Italian and one German are included, the others treat a wide range of significant individuals from elsewhere, including, among others, the Hungarians Gyula Gömbös and Ferenc Szálasi, the Romanians Corneliu Codreanu and Ion Antonescu, the Czech Konrad Henlein, and the Slovak Jozef Tiso. Some are widely considered fascist, whereas the status of others remains controversial. Haynes’s introduction seeks common themes.

What are the best books about the Byzantines?
>>
>>2532615
If you want to start somewhere, try to get the John Julius Norwhich Trilogy. Serves as a basic narrative from Constantine to 1453. However, it's hard to get physical copies of all the books.

There's "Byzantium: A Surprising life of a Medieval Empire" and "Byzantium: A very short Introduction"

If you really want, I can email you a free download of "The World of Byzantium" Audible lecture series by Kenneth Harl, who I've listened do a superb job on 3 other lecture series (Crusades, Rome and the Barbarians, and Alexander and the Macedonian Empire). Byzantium is his speciality. You gotta have an audible account to use it though

I'm looking for books about Sulla and the social war
>>
>>2535444
Keaveney, Arthur. 2005. Sulla: The last republican. 2d ed. London: Routledge.
>This readable biography is conversant with the important scholarship but also accessible to the general reader. Keaveney's portrait of Sulla is a generally positive one, arguing for the legitimacy and justifiability of his actions and religious convictions in terms of contemporary perceptions.
Badian, E. 1970. Lucius Sulla: The deadly reformer. Sydney: Sydney Univ. Press.
>A powerful indictment of Sulla. Although no more than a brief sketch of his career, this essay stresses the darker side: Sulla's unprecedented march on Rome, the proscriptions and massacres, the confiscation of property and repression of opponents, and the reforms that turned the government over to self-serving and incompetent
Harris, William V. 1971. Rome in Etruria and Umbria. Oxford: Oxford Univ. Press.
>Harris's thorough and scrupulous study of the evidence provides a reliable history of Roman expansion, intervention, and intricate association with Etruria and Umbria from the 4th century BCE through the Augustan era. Harris treats, among other things, the treaties and interstate relations, Roman colonization in the area, the spread of Latin in the region, the extension of citizenship, and the effects of the Social War and the Sullan settlement.

Mouritsen, Henrik. 1998. Italian unification: A study in ancient and modern historiography. London: Institute of Classical Studies, Univ. of London.
>An acute account of Italian reactions to Roman authority, the background to and the effects of the pivotal Social War. Mouritsen illuminatingly makes use of modern perspectives as well as a thorough scrutiny of the ancient evidence on this tangled and difficult question.
>>
>>2536175
Keaveney, Arthur. 2005. Rome and the unification of Italy. 2d ed. Bristol: Bristol Phoenix.
>A serviceable narrative of relations between Rome and the Italians from the early 2nd century through the Social War. Keaveney argues that the break between them gradually evolved in the 2nd century with growing Italian disaffection, aggravated by the politics of the Gracchan era, and brought to the surface by Roman exclusiveness and arrogance.

well, im sort of just interested in the logistics, the lifestyles and the impact of medieval industries in general. Like olive oil or pepper, the organisational structure of tin mines, the methods used in procuring dyes, how various goods were stored and transported in large quantities, whether or not there were any dedicated permanent settlements focusing on the production of charcoal and iron weapons for use in battles in other regions or if supplies were gathered individually from local smiths and produced by smiths in follower camps, how did the follower camps procure their raw materials for leather work and smithing? Why were so few early commanders concerned about logistics? I'm very interested in medieval communities that are almost entirely dedicated to a specific industry or product and how they came to be, what their role is in society and what kind of power is wielded by those who control it. Ideally between 460 CE and 1160 CE.

Can anyone recommend me some stuff on Huey Long?
>>
>>2541681
this should work
Brinkley, Alan. Voices of Protest: Huey Long, Father Coughlin, and the Great Depression. New York: Vintage, 1982.

these books might potentially discuss Long:

Schlesinger, Arthur M., Jr. The Politics of Upheaval. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1960.
>In this third and final volume Schlesinger examines the Court-led rejection of the first New Deal, the challenges to Roosevelt from the left, and Roosevelt’s crafting of the second New Deal before finishing with a discussion and analysis of Roosevelt’s reelection in 1936. This work provides a clear understanding of how class played into the famous New Deal coalition crafted by Roosevelt.
schlesinger is supposed to be great but he doesn't hide his democratic sympathies

Leuchtenburg, William E. Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal. New York: Harper & Row, 1963.
>In this well-written volume Leuchtenburg deftly explores the myriad ways class was seemingly everywhere in the politics of the New Deal.

nice. at least two other anons attempted to make a comprehensive google doc for /his/ like that but the project never gained steam. it's partly why i started making these book charts lately.

as I'm looking at exploration books atm, this one seemed to pop out:

Parry, J. H. The Discovery of the Sea: An Illustrated History of Men, Ships, and the Sea in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries. New York: Dial, 1974.
>A lucid account of the background and effects of the major voyages of discovery. Discusses the preparations needed in terms of maritime equipment, the technical problems associated with oceanic seafaring and their solutions, and the nature of the ocean crossings. A learned book despite its coffee-table appearance.

wat. Tolstoy was never really leftist, but he did take a spiritual/christian turn in his later life, denouncing all of his previous works as immoral and decadent and basically larping as a peasant on his estate and doing educational stuff to better them. irony is though that he drove his wife to despair fucking his peasant mistress and bearing several children with her...

those intro books will also discuss phoenicians, like richard miles for example. I've also gather books on phoenicians here. A lot of them seem to be very specialized works, some only touching on the phoenicians tangentially. However, there are some general works in there

interesting idea... how would you do that though? dl the books and then put them in one zip file right?
>>

Something like that yes. We had a library of Alexandria thread with book links for download

Or you could just get yourself onto a private tracker for books and download the ones you want. It's not difficult.

Is there a good one for Nazi Germany/Hitler/National Socialism?

I know it's been beat to death as a topic but I'd like to see an attempt to aggregate the good stuff.

I happen to have this chart. Note that I haven't read anything on here so I can't say whether it's good or not.
>>
>>2549612
Some of those are pretty good, but stuff like Blitzed is out of place and weak. Rise and Fall is also notoriously sub-par as a work of history. Not sure about the last row aside from the Browning text, which is probably pretty good. I'll have to check it out.
>>

OP here, i'm getting stuff assembled. It's the next chart i'll make cause its a popular topic here. anything that you want to see on there? for example, i may cover the holocaust in another chart but maybe i'll put a few works intro works. I'll see how much space i have. I'll also put on comparative studies, debates about nazism and fascism, totalitarianism and how it links stalinism and nazism, besides stuff on hitler and the nazi regime. I think military history stuff would need a separate chart. here's what i got so far:

But in all seriousness could anyone recommend me a book that takes a general survey of Italian history from the medieval era to the 20th century? OP's picture seems really interesting, but it's not exactly what I'm looking for.

Blitzed, KL and The Holocaust seems to be pretty recent compared to the others.
Been selling good in our stores are they worth the read?
>>
>>2552286
>Been selling good in our stores
that's because they've been hyped all over the media. while i'm not /pol/ack, i'm left wondering lately why all media outlets make a coordinated attempt to shill a certain book or event (as in, they all review it at the same time and interview the author etc. etc.). they did this with blitzed and hamilton and countless other things in the past.
>>
>>2552319
We rarely have ads about books in my country, say from thriller novels, witch is what sells the most around here.

>i'm left wondering lately why all media outlets make a coordinated attempt to shill a certain book or event (as in, they all review it at the same time and interview the author etc. etc.)
1.They bought ad space
2.Media and magazines tend to review things just before the launch of the book or movie.
3.They gardened attention online and word of mouth.
4.Controversy sells.

Answer my question about the said books I put fourth or don't bother replying.

I'm currently on this book, published in 2000, and it's great. It is detailed, but written in a way that you can consume it.
Though, every few pages he references specific parts of Scotland in a way you could only understand if you were more familiar with their highway system and so on
>Lively, detailed reading of Scottish history from the Mesolithic era up to Modern day Scotland (1999 at the time.)
>Book has several maps, (all of them page sized, no fold outs or anything like that) including a general map of Scotland and a map of the Romans in Scotland.
>Along with the maps, he also has a Chronology of Scotland in the back listing the events as they happened by year from 10,000 BC to 1999 AD.

I've been travelling very slowly with this booking, barely breaking more than few pages a day, and I'm unhappy with how little of a dent I've made in the past few days of reading it.

I didn't think this question deserved it's own thread, so I'll ask here.
Is there any trick to retaining the years and as much of the information as possible, /his/? I think I've done a fairly decent job of it, I've got a decent memory. But I want to be able to reference the years and their events with certainty and confidence in the future.
