Catholics fought everyone who wasn't Catholic. Also you can't say that the Crusades didn't have an effect on stopping Islam spreading into Europe.

The Reconquista was one big holy war aswell.

Literally every single Crusade with the exception of the Baltic Crusades were wars of either defense, reclamation of lost lands or extremely limited preemptive aggression. None of the Crusades were conquests for material gain or for the sake of conquest itself.

The vast majority of the people who went would be men, so even if they lose, it would be a bunch of dude prisoners.

All in all, the crusades ensured naval dominance of Europe in the Mediterranean again and ushered in a new age of lush trade that made Europe rich as fuck.
