Stalin's business model was "invite western mega corps to invest in resource extraction, jack up the cost of doing business so that these plants fall into trouble, and use that as a pretext to nationalize that industry and run the people who created it out of town.

Once their economy was finished industrializing growth dropped to essentially zero, and the brittle Soviet economy simply lacked dynamism and robustness and could no longer compete with the west.

And they were the "bad guys" because they were a bunch of STEMspergs sending people who disagreed with them to forced labor camps if they weren't murdered outright.
