The problem is that religions were inherently transcendental, so Christians and Muslims are just fine waiting for the apocalypse, and Jews are just fine waiting for the Messiah.

Those political ideologies, though, bring the utopian millenarian world to the historical reality, that's why they kill so much compared to traditional religions. Even liberalism, considered the mildest one, killed more people in a few months during the Reign of Terror in France than the Inquisition in six centuries.

the rub is that the religions aren't the truth due to lack of evidence. Neither do a lot of the ideologies but at least they are grounded in physical cause-effects observations.
