The Catholic Church viewed as a political institution lost a tremendous amount of influence between the Protestant reformation and the 100 years war. They also define the concept of 'Modernism' as thought free from religious context. Of course this is all from a westerners perspective. If you are Muslim the world is more religious today than it has been for a LONG time.

for europe it was really the destruction of the 30 years war. after the peace of Westphalia religion started taking a back seat to colonial and trade wars. also what ever Prussia and Russia where up too. as for the rest of the world that doesn't totally fit into such a clean narrative.
