ITT: Countries you wish happened.

Personally, I would have loved it if a non-Western nation colonized the some of the Pacific, since Egypt always forms Australia in my EU4 games. Bonus points for gratuitous detail.

My pipe dream would've been a German ethno-state in North America, specifically Texas.

During the mid to late 1800s, a handful of German nobles attempted to found and find funding for German settlers to migrate to Texas, the effort being named the Adelsverein (Society for the Protection of German Immigrants). There was a slight split in the goal between the more wealthy organizers of the society, the nobles, and some of the middle class equivilents, on the final goal of the project. The middle and lower classes were looking to simply leave Germany behind to avoid the less liberal policies of the German monarchies of the time and saw America as a prime place to practice religion and trades away from the structure of Europe. Some of the nobles of the expedition had planned to ramp up colonization to outpace the sparse Mexican population at the time and later supplant the Anglo population; the end result would be a de facto German state within the Americas that could stand as a German colony with support from the old world.

Unfortunately, due to interests within Europe taking priority of funding, it was difficult to offer incentives for the German migrants to the new world. Families were originally receiving several acres of land in what would later be called the Texas Hill Country along with $200 (Big money back then) to migrate. As time wore on, the original funders of the society began to reduce their monetary support, giving less support to immigrants. In addition, the lead noble of the project was unable to convince his future wife to move to such a distant land; he eventually opted to remain in the German region of Europe and settle there, leaving the project to be handled by another noble who renounced his title once settling in (Effectively breaking ties to the old world).

The Texan revolution at the hands of the Anglo-Americans further compounded matters and reduced optimism for the project. As the tide of settlers dried up, the German colony became nothing more than a loosely united group of towns in central Texas.

As time wore on, these Germans, who for many years had refused to assimilate, retaining a culture distinct from the Anglo settlers and their own language, which caused friction with the majority leadership in the state. This came to a head when the Germans supported the Union during the civil war, causing the state government to retaliate against the settlements, driving a portion of the settlers south to the Mexican border. Further pressure came from the outbreak of WW1 and the US siding with the Allied forces; the final nail in the coffin was WW2, in which laws were enacted to force Americanization of anyone who might hold loyalty to Axis forces. This eventually caused a lot of the unique culture of the hill country to dissipate, where now only the most elderly could tell you about some of the local history.

Alt-Hist thread in general?

Julian the Apostate listens to the fucking oracle and holds off on sending the Eastern legions into Persia to get loot to placate them; he succeeds in bringing back Paganism.

The Persian-Byzantine union that Byzaboo larpers sperg about actually happens. Islam is crushed when Muhammed is just a common bandit. Byzantium-Persia acts much like the Ottoman Empire, an oriental despotic foil to Western Europe.

So what would've happened had the Society actually managed to accomplish their intended mission?

Assuming the continual migration of German settlers and the establishment of Prince Karl as a Lord of the settlement, it's theoretically possible that the Texan Revolution would've been caused by Germans instead of Anglos. Antonio-Lopez de Santa Ana, the president of Mexico at time, was attempting centralization of the Mexican state against the will of many territories on the edge of the Empire; revolts in Yucatan, California, and northern Mexico had broke out as well, but not to the degree of the Texan revolution. With the difficulties Mexico faced against a hastily scrapped together volunteer militia force of Anglo-Texans, it's very likely that a larger German revolution with the backing of the major German states in Europe would've been resoundingly successful. Whereas the Anglo-Texans barely managed to maintain an uneasy treaty with Santa Ana (He was captured in battle and agreed to whatever terms they proposed in order to save his own skin, but had no intention of honoring them when Mexico was ready to fight again after solving the discipline, training, and logistical problems that plagued them during the war), it's likely a trained and organized German force could've dictated more permanent terms and held them with European backing.

However, the creation of this state would make the US government incredibly uneasy. Not only would the existence of a new state seen as a potential part of the US been a problem, it would've also resulted in an American nation with direct ties back to Europe, something America was particularly wary of. This would've generated additional friction between America, this new German state, and the German territories of Europe, and would've made isolation less favorable than the containing of this new threat. It would also serve as an obstacle to the US's goal of manifest destiny, controlling everything all the way to the pacific. The competition between the two would probably spark a lot of border tension, and possibly delay the American Civil War by increasing hostilities towards German Texas.

Beyond the creation of the state, the effects of it would vary greatly depending on it's diplomatic stance to Mexico and the US in the Americas and the relation it held with the fatherland back home. It would also be up in the air if it would be established as a nation with the rule of nobles or as a republic, which would further affect matters of the state such as its relation to new world territories and how attractive it was to immigrants looking to escape the monarchs of Germany.

An interesting thing to note would be this new state's role in the Mexican civil war, in which France attempted to place a European monarch on the throne of the Mexican empire. Friendly aid from a nearby country could've seen Mexico remaining with a monarch instead of liberals reinstituting the republic. (Doubtful since Maximilian was actually a really sympathetic guy who was willing to die for the citizenry if that's what they wanted.)
