What were the cons of a warhammer compared to a mace? Seems like a straight up better option considering it also has a spike so it's more versatile.

Useless if you ran out of nails

If someone went into battle with it I'd think "lol what a tool".
A hammer has a face, a mace does not.
With a warhammer youve got to hit head on or else its a glancing blow.
A warhammer can hit on any one of its sides and deal the same damage.
Furthermore, a mace is usually heavier, so it hits harder.

Are maces heavier? I feel just by looking at them that the warhammer would be heavier.

Edge alignment.
You have to aim the hammer/spike part at a proper angle or it will glance off(surprisingly common actually).
With a mace, you just swing, since the angle is irrelevant.

Spikes are actually not good against plate armor, only against mail or lamellar;

(notice how the breastplate is actually fixed into place and yet the spike still barely goes in an inch)
Blunt impact is the only way to go with plate armor, piercing it sucks ass and will more likely just result in your weapon being stuck in it than actually killing the dude.

How many layers of lard can it go through though?

That's brutal why didn't everyone just use a warhammer back then?

Need to be conscious of edge alignment, short reach, can't thrust with it, can be unwieldy if not balanced properly, not that useful against unarmoured opponents, etc.

>not that useful against unarmoured opponents
if it can deck a guy in armor why would an unarmored one be any different?
>>2482014
I'ts not that it can't hurt someone unarmored, it's that you can do more damage with a longer, thinner, sharper weapon, which also makes you more likely to get the first blow in.

That is factory sheath tinfoil, not hammered steel.
Compare the dent he does in that video to this reconstruction;

Mind you, that is a fucking poleaxe swing.
