The colonies south from Virginia and the Chesapeake were certainly heavily dependent on slavery by the 18th century, but New England never was, at least not directly.

black people become central to western european society from the beginning and that transfers over to America because european credit markets rely directly on trafficking african slaves in order to grow and develop. New england was dependent on slavery in the beginning to build infrastructure and then on the cotton provided from them south. Also, the massive land speculation that happened once lands west of the Appalachian opened up had a lot to do with the notion that you could now use the large slaves populations in the southern states and take them west and make a fortune

There is the argument that agriculture was the basis upon which the cities grew. Black America was part of Agrarian America. And when farmers had to go to the cities to work in the undermanned factories during the wars, that included the Great Migration too.

So, along with poor white farmers and their descendants, you can say that African-Americans were part of the agricultural class that became unskilled workers and were never fully integrated into the industrial economy in a way that benefited them, and instead remain exploited to this day.

There is also something to be said for the poor generating most economic growth based on their increased rates of consumption. When you can't afford stuff that lasts or any kind of stability or control over your life, you end up paying more in cheap shoes and apartments than in boots that last and a house that becomes your land for generations to come. That's why sales taxes disproportionately hurt the poor more than the rich.

This is halfway true, from media to how our government is structured currently have been formulated around the foundation of lower income/lower iq people.
