ITT we post foods and dishes that had historical relevance. Bonus points for staples of life.

Pic related is garum, a condiment or sauce used by greeks and romans. It's basically fermented fish intestines and smaller fishes with salt and various spices namely oregano.

It was so popular among romans due to their fish heavy diet that garum factories were quite popular. The smell that would come out of those factories must have been the most gut wrenching shit ever. Imaging living next to one and waking up every morning to the smell of rotting fish guts.

Breakfast food created to pillory a race traitor or some shit in the Song Dynasty. Originated in the south so you don't really see this reflected in Japanese or Korean cuisine.

Pic related is one of those garum factories. The square holes would be where they would leave the mixture to ferment for about a day.

Native american didn't farm wheat but would make flour out of boiled and roasted acorns to make bread. I'd try to make some myself but we don't have acorns where I live.

I do not understand this statement. what does food have to do with pillory-ing someone? there is absolutely no way in hell you can pillory someone with anything edible.

IIRC wasn't the spice trade the entire impetus behind Columbus's voyage?

Not just spices. Asia had tons of products that europe wanted such as jewlery.

Mostly, Spain saw his voyage as the silk road 2.0

It's probably just that everyone was pillorying him so long that they got hungry and someone created a tasty snack for the crowd
