They were like any other med nations before islam, te culture, way of live etc was very romanized or hellenic plus native. Those influences are strong enough today,but islam ando árab culture dominate.

I'd say Egypt and Sudan, The Horn of Africa, the Maghreb, West Africa are all meaningful regions.

I'm not so sure how the rest should be divided.
